The Group has been a pioneer in this field
having been involved in the Natural Gas Industry since 1980. As
a result of the Group's presence in the natural gas sector in
Greece and the strategic importance of the Russian natural gas
for the country, a joint company has been established under the
name of
PROMETHEUS GAS S.A.
PROMETHEUS GAS S.A. is a Greek – Russian joint company, established in 1991 in Athens. The Russian natural gas export company GAZPROMEXPORT LIMITED, on behalf of OAO GAZPROM, holds the 50% of the shares. Mr. Dimitrios Ch. Copelouzos, Chairman & Managing Director of COPELOUZOS GROUP, holds the other 50% of the shares.
GAZPROMEXPORT LTD is a 100% subsidiary of
OAO GAZPROM, which is the largest
natural gas producer in the world controlling the 23.5% of the
world natural gas reserves.
Among the basic sectors of the business
activity of the Group and of PROMETHEUS GAS S.A. are the
importation and marketing of Russian natural gas in the Greek
Market, the participation in the development of the necessary
infrastructure with active involvement in the construction of
natural gas transmission pipelines, compressor stations and city
natural gas distribution networks. Within the interests of the
Group also fall the promotion and the implementation of business
plans, aiming at creating new major natural gas consumers such
as the modern natural gas fired combined cycle power stations.
For the implementation of its plans, PROMETHEUS GAS S.A.
has secured for at least 50 years, through OAO GAZPROM, large
quantities of gas in excess of those contracted to be imported
into Greece by the state utility DEPA. These quantities amount
to 3 billion cubic meters (bcm) annually until 2016 and 7 bcm
annually beyond this period.
The business plans of PROMETHEUS GAS S.A. also
include its participation in the energy market of the broader
Balkan area since the company holds the exclusive rights to
supply Russian natural gas to the neighbouring countries through
Greece, and has been appointed by OAO GAZPROM as its authorized
representative in the Balkans for dealing with issues related to
the reconstruction and development of the energy sector in the
area.
The main advantages of PROMETHEUS GAS S.A.
are on the one hand the vast experience of the Russian natural
gas industry which is transferred to the company through its
shareholder GAZPROMEXPORT LTD and on the other hand the fact that
PROMETHEUS GAS S.A. is an affiliated company of OAO GAZPROM.
It is evident that PROMETHEUS GAS S.A.
possesses the two fundamental factors for contributing
effectively to the development of the Natural Gas Market in
Greece: the gas and the experience.
